Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc. Mourns the Loss of Stefan Romaniw OAM

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stefan Romaniw OAM, a tireless advocate for the Ukrainian community in Australia and a cherished leader within the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO). Stefan’s unwavering dedication and commitment to the Ukrainian cause has left an indelible mark on the Ukrainian community in Australia and the diaspora globally.

Stefan Romaniw served as the Co-Chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations and held numerous key positions, including the First Vice-President of the Ukrainian World Congress. His efforts were instrumental in strengthening the Ukrainian diaspora globally and advocating for Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic values.

Peter Bongiorni, President of the Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc. (UCQ), expressed his heartfelt condolences, stating, “Stefan Romaniw’s passing is a monumental loss for the Ukrainian community in Australia and worldwide. His relentless advocacy and leadership have inspired many, and his legacy will continue to guide us in our efforts to support Ukraine and our diaspora.”

Stefan’s leadership was marked by significant achievements, including his involvement in the establishment of vital community organisations and his steadfast support for Ukraine during times of crisis. His commitment to human rights, democracy, and the preservation of Ukrainian culture was unparalleled.

In 2001, Stefan was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his contributions to education and CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) communities. In 2003, he received the Centenary Medal for his services to the community. His dedication to Ukraine was also recognised with three levels of Orders of Recognition and Medals from the President of Ukraine, as well as the Foreign Affairs of Ukraine medal for his services to international relations.

“Stefan’s passion and dedication were evident in every initiative he undertook. His contributions to the Ukrainian community have been immense, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working with him,” added Mr Bongiorni. “We will continue to honour his legacy by upholding the values and principles he championed throughout his life.”

Stefan Romaniw’s professional work included significant roles with the Victorian Government and various cultural and educational institutions. His advocacy extended to numerous platforms, where he tirelessly worked to ensure the voice of the Ukrainian community was heard and respected.

As we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader, we extend our deepest sympathies to Stefan’s family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us as we strive to build a stronger, more united Ukrainian community.
